EHS Management
Experience Sharing
--Continual improvement
of SMRT Wuxi PU EHS management
EHS First is always well implemented in
Sandvik operation. Sandvik Mining Rock Tools (SMRT) Wuxi PU sets EHS in the
first place among our three main targets. During the 1950 days after the setup
of our plant, there is no lost time of injury or total recordable incident.
Excellent EHS performance cannot be achieved without the focus and support of
our management team and the active involvement of all the employees. Our EHS
management will be introduced from the three aspects below, EHS Leadership, EHS
Communication and Total-employee EHS Involvement.
1. EHS
Leadership--the power of role model
In 2012, by using the experience of other
Sandvik Mining PUs for reference, and integrating with our own practice, the
EHS risks of each department, and the responsibility of our management team at
different levels, SMRT Wuxi PU worked out our Four-grade EHS Leadership
requirement (four-grade for site manager, department manager or supervisor,
team supervisor, team leader) and signed EHS commitment letter with all the
relevant four-grade leaders. The EHS commitment is included in the performance
index of all the leaders. In this way, the site manager, department managers or
supervisors, team supervisors, and team leaders understand their clear and
definite EHS responsibility, have better self-management in daily work, and set
good example in EHS behavior and awareness for their subordinates, thus
enhancing the EHS behavior and awareness of all the employees of our PU.
2. EHS
Communication --the power of brainstorm
Besides
the EHS leadership of our PU, according to one of our core value, Open Mind, we
also consider the suggestions, advice, proposals and feedback of all the
employees and respect their requirement and demand. We take the below actions,
1) Appointing
employee representative: Recommended by employees and appointed by our company,
three workers and one office staff are selected to be our EHS Employee Representatives.
Working as the representatives of all the employees, they supervise EHS work,
report EHS issues, involve in EHS targets setting and review, and participate
in EHS risk identification and assessment.
2) Holding
tool-box meeting every morning: EHS could be discussed and learned in tool-box
meeting. Any EHS related issues could be reported in the meeting.
3) Making
hazard report: Any hazard that found by employees could be filled in EHS report
form in the workshop entrance or reported directly to team leaders or managers.
4) Holding
monthly employee communication meeting: The meeting was organized by HR
department and the participants are selected from management team, office staff
and workers. All of our employees have equal chance to participate in the
meeting. Any EHS related issues or concern could be communicated in the
meeting.
5) Implementation
Improvement Idea Program: Our company encourages employees to submit
improvement ideas to improve the operation of our PU. EHS related suggestions
and ideas are also greatly encouraged. All adopted improvement ideas will be
evaluated carefully and the related employee will be awarded with prize. Till
the end of November 2012, three employees had received certificate and prize
after the adoption of their EHS improvement idea.
3. Total-employee
EHS Involvement --the power of employee involvement and self-management
1) Improvement
of EHS inspection: Our monthly EHS inspection used to be carried out by EHS
staff. Since October 2012, the EHS inspection is carried out weekly by
representatives from each department and the inspection leader is operation
related managers or supervisors. By participating actively in EHS inspection,
the employee-involvement is improved and the ability to identify hazard and
risks is strengthened.
2) Various
EHS activities:
a. Tree-planting
Activity
On
May 8th 2012, we held a tree-planting activity in our plant area.
109 trees were planted on that day. About 40 trees were planted by our own
employees and the rest were planted by our contractor.
b. EHS
Comes into Family Activity
On
May 20th 2012, all our employees and our families, more than 100
people totally, participated in the EHS Comes into Family Activity. The
activity theme was Safety & Health, Harmony & Development. Family-care
was also a very important part of our EHS education in this activity.
c. Campaign
of Wearing Seat Belts
Our
PU participated in the Campaign of Wearing Seat Belts organized by Sandvik
Greater China. We emphasized the great importance of wearing seat belt whenever
we drove or took shuttle bus. We also encouraged our employees to supervise
each other to keep the good habit.
EHS
always needs continuous improvement and development. Our Wuxi PU needs to keep
learning and self-examination. In our annual EHS management review meeting, we
can find what needs to be improved or corrected, and confirm our improvement
and development direction in future. Our new EHS management objective is to
change our EHS management model from the current goal-oriented model to EHS
behavior & awareness-oriented model.
Remark:
The words of EHS Management Experience Sharing have been reported in Chinese
national level work safety magazine in Feb.2013.
